For people who aren’t oral health professionals themselves, all the drills, picks, polishers and x-rays can be pretty freaky -- not to mention all the people walking around with masks and funny looking scrubs. Unfortunately, the result of this dental-phobia is all too often people letting lots and lots of time go by between checkups. As you’ve probably guessed, the solution we here at the
Medford sedation dentist practice of Dental Excellence have come up with is, well, sedation. What does this mean exactly? Basically, it means that, when you come in for an appointment, will give you some kind of medicine to help calm you down and/or to help you forget the appointment entirely. In addition to nitrous oxide (a.k.a. “laughing gas”), some of the standard drugs used in sedation dentistry include valium, Halcion, Sonata, Ativan, Vistaril and Versed -- each of which having its own unique set of properties. How does a typical sedation dentistry session proceed? Really not at all unlike a normal dental checkup. After we’ve given you something to calm you down, we’ll check your mouth your mouth for tooth decay, plaque and tartar building, gum disease and other similar problems. If we determine that you need treatment, we’ll either augment the sedative regime and proceed with whatever procedures need to be carried out, or we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment, where sedatives will once again be administered.
Now, it’s important to know that due to the nature of some of the sedatives we use here at the
Medford sedation dentist practice of Dental Excellence, you may need to have a friend or family member come along with you to your appointment to make sure that you’re able to make it home okay. In addition, some patients may be ineligible for sedation due to pre-existing medical conditions. Of course, we’ll have a detailed conversation with you to make sure you stay safe.
